A recent study carried out by Worldwatch Institute on “The World’s Nutrition” shows that the world’s meat production and consumption are increasing rapidly, bringing significant impact to the world’s environment, people’s health and economy.

The study shows that world’s meat production increased by 3 times over the past 4 decades. A 20% growth was also recorded of the past decade. In 2009, the annual meat consumption per capita was 41.3kg, and further increased to 41.9kg in 2010. Meat consumption per capita in developing countries was 32kg, while meat consumption in developed countries amounted to 80kg per capita.

The study also shows that between 2000 and 2050, demand for pasturage products will double in Sothern African Sahara and Southeast Asia regions. The per capita demand will increase from 200 kilocalories to 400 kilocalories.

The study also reveals that pork is by far the most favoured meat product in the world, followed by poultry meat, beef and lamb. Among all meat products, poultry meat recorded the fastest growth rate, with an annual growth rate of 4.7% in 2010, reaching 98 million tons.
